Natural Indigo Dyeing with Naomi Joy Yamamoto

Natural Indigo Dyeing with Naomi Joy Yamamoto

{ NEW – Spring 2019 Workshop }

  • Fri June 7th 6:30-8:30pm (2 hours)

Natural indigo has been used for thousands of years. Every community has its own ritual, recipe and technique for creating indigo dye. Guest instructor Naomi Joy Yamamoto joins us at OH Studio for a special hands-on workshop on the evening of Friday, June 7th for 2 hours of ancient dye exploration.

In this 2 hour workshop, we will explore the magic of indigo in combination with various shibori and resist dyeing methods. Participants will gain a basic knowledge of the process. We will be utilizing clamps, string and blocks to create patterns onto fabric. Indigo involves a chemical change of oxidation whereby the dye transforms from green to blue once it is out of the vat.

Some cotton yardage will be included for samples, and blank scarves will be available for purchase during the workshop if you choose. Attendees may also bring their own cotton, silk, or linen materials to dye (*please limit 1-2 items per participant). Please note that synthetic materials will not work with natural indigo. Come prepared with mess-friendly clothes, an apron if you have one, and expect a workshop filled with alchemy, experimentation, and play.

Naomi Joy Yamamoto is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design where she received a BFA with distinction in textiles. Her artistic practice has included mixed media installations, leatherwork and natural dye processes.

We welcome Naomi, and can’t wait to see you at this special Spring workshop!
